How it Works

Dynamite Rankings take three things into account:

  1. Margin of victory: Beating a team by 30 points is more impressive than beating a team by 10, which is more impressive than losing by 7.
  2. Strength of schedule: Playing well against Alabama is more impressive than playing well against Hawaii.
  3. Home field advantage: Home teams win by 4 points on average. Dynamite Rankings correct for that.
For each game, add the margin of victory, the number of points associated with the opposing team, and add 4 points for playing an away game or subtract 4 points for playing at home. Lump all the FCS teams together  for ease of calculation. What results is a system of 125 equations with 125 unknowns that you ask Excel to solve for you. The score calculated for each team is the amount of points that team is expected to beat an average team at a neutral location.
